Development
In January 2011, reports had emerged that Rajinikanth's next film, following his prior successful venture with S. Shankar's Enthiran (2010), would be Rana, a historical drama film to be directed by K. S. Ravikumar and dually-produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth's Ocher Picture Productions and Eros Entertainment. A few months following the announcement, principal photography was set to begin on 29 April 2011 at AVM Studios in Chennai. However, in a turn of events, Rajinikanth became ill and was treated for dehydration and exhaustion at a hospital, after being diagnosed with a mild foodborne illness, resulting in postponment of filming. Following this, Rajinikanth went through subsequent hospital visits, afterwhich he was eventually obliged to be admitted for treating an undisclosed form of nephropathy, extensively delaying the commencement of Rana. Upon Rajinikanth's return from treatment, he was advised to not begin working for a few more months, making all attempts of starting Rana again unsuccessful. After a period of no word about the project, Soundarya Rajinikanth posted a message on her Twitter account on 23 November 2011, notifying followers to "look out for an official announcement very soon". The following day, Soundarya tweeted the announcement was that her father's next film was Kochadaiyaan and that she was "[grateful and] excited to be directing [her] father", In the media, a tentatively scheduled release period of August 2012 was also announced. The film was finalized to be the co-production of Eros Entertainment and Media One Global. In the following days, Soundarya tweeted that K. S. Ravikumar had worked with her father and herself on finalizing the script of the film. With regards to the film's title, K. S. Ravikumar claimed that while it was partly inspired by the name of the Pandya Dynasty king Kochadaiyan Ranadhiran, the title draws reference to an alternate name of Hindu deity Shiva and that the plot would be "a fictional account with small references to history".
Casting
Following the film's initial announcement, Anushka Shetty was approached to play the female lead role in the film, though her commitment to the film is not yet confirmed. It was also rumoured that producers preferred a Bollywood actress for the lead role instead.Later, Snehawas reported to be finalized for a lead actress role in the film, making it her first time working with Rajinikanth. Peter Hein was chosen as the film's action choreographer, officially marking Kochadaiyaan his debut in a 3D film. A. R. Rahman accepted a request to compose the film's background score and soundtrack.
Filming
The film is expected to be the first Indian 3D film shot with the kind of performance capturing technology used in films such as Avatar (2009) and The Adventures of Tintin (2011).
